Tunnel Vision

Woodholme Construction Services have recently carried out pioneering works that could lead to a revolution in the construction of railway track bases.

Our specialist paving teams were employed to lay a macadam track bed through the entire length of a tunnel at Asfordby in Leicestershire.

The macadam bed is used as part of a unique system that when combined with precast concrete units, can produce an extremely stable, long lasting foundation for heavy or high speed train traffic.

Working in a rail tunnel produced some specific issues such as health and safety, and the team had to undergo specific training programmes. The logistics of delivering material to site, and more specifically supplying the paver in the tunnel all involved considerable planning.

Special thanks to the Woodholmes site team, who worked tirelessly around strict line closure schedules. The operation came together to ensure that deadlines were met and disruption avoided.
